OK, so they may not be the top network all around but it has been a very good summer for the Spanish language channel, Univision.
In the wake of the 2010 World Cup and with two hit Novellas, Univision has been setting the networks up for a knockout. Thursday night Univision delivered by beating out ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX with the airing of the “2010 Premios Juventud“, the 7th annual awards show with 11.4 million viewers. For a long time now marketers have been talking about the Latino demographic being the up and coming market to tap. According to thewrap.com, Univision is number 2 behind Fox in the July sweeps. As marketers we certainly have a lot to look at.
It never amazes me what people will do for a quick fix to look better. Today there are body wraps, diet drinks, Botox shots and pills all promising you a fast way to slim down for that upcoming special occasion. Do you realize that back in the 70′s people had the same body image problems and companies were willing to profit from these insecurities? Claiming to reduce your waist, hips, tummy and thighs the Wonder Sauna Hot Pants have to be seen to believed!
Amazing, right?!? Thought you might agree. Just imagine slipping into one of those babies. What I found even more unnerving is that these products, or the modern spin offs are still for sale and being marketed to us through websites like Amazon.
Check out this link to how many are available on this one site alone. I don’t know about you, but before I put on some pricey snug garment that promises to reduce anything of mine, I would rather eat right and exercise!

This morning I came across an interesting post on the Yahoo! TV Blog, which basically posed the question “The Old Spice commercials were a viral sensation, and the Old Spice guy, Isaiah Mustafa, is a celebrity. So why did sales of Old Spice body wash actually drop?”
Although, actually it was the blog by Jezebel.com that posed the question and even suggested some answers.
There is no doubt that this campaign has become the viral sensation that every major company dreams of. It’s entertaining, it’s provided tons of residual awareness as it has been re-posted and talked about both online and on tv. So why the lack of returns for the company? The ads seem great…
They’re memorable, they’re humorous, so what’s going wrong?
Sales of the product are actually down!
Jezebel.com suggests three possible answers…
- The humorous campaign became so popular that it actually became uncool to use the product. Ouch!
- The ads aren’t actually hitting the target audience that buys the product. The target was apparently women who would buy the stuff for their male counterparts, but perhaps they’re not making that purchase. Who buys someone else soap or body wash? What are you saying to them?
- Lastly they proposed that perhaps the brand itself is too stale to resuscitate, even pointing to the word “old” from the name “old spice” as a detriment. Today’s audience still viewing it as dad or grandpa’s product.
Another interesting point brought up in the blog’s comments was that many of today’s men aren’t as interested in putting on so many chemicals, that old fashioned environmentally friendly soap was still a preference for many.
These points are all debatable but one thing is certain, a flashy campaign even if it hits a huge audience, doesn’t always equal success for the advertiser.
You can draw them in with celebrities and pretty people, you can grab eyeballs with polished visuals and humor, but if the right message and a quality product isn’t there it becomes just another piece of online entertainment.
